Tracing the Path of Chloride:
From Ion Channels and Transporters to Physiology and Therapeutics Since 1946, one of the principal activities of SGP has been the organization of an annual meeting dedicated to an emerging topic of broad physiological significance. The 2025 SGP Annual Meeting will focus on the ion channels and transporters that diverse organisms use to move chloride into and out of cells. These vital proteins play commanding roles in physiology; they regulate critical processes, including neuronal activity and cardiovascular tone, and their dysfunction gives rise to conditions like chronic pain, epilepsy, and neurodegeneration. This meeting will bring together researchers working to understand how these channels and transporters operate at the molecular level. By bringing together experts in ion transport, neuroscience, and drug development, this meeting aims to advance our understanding of chloride’s role in health and disease, a discourse needed to develop new treatments and approaches to target these disorders.
